I was making a skirt for a 2 year old girl, but didn't have a model handy, so Jacob tried on the skirt. He looks a little small for it, but it worked. At the bottom is the finished product. I don't know how it will hold up with repeated washings. I also made a little ball to go with it.

Refuge House Quilt Tops

Here we are with the very first Refuge House quilt tops complete. They look nicer than I thought they would. Now we have to figure out how to put the backing on and bind them. We are going to go without batting because they will be sent to a warm climate, so we want these to be used, and not put away because they are too heavy. As we pieced together these tops, we realized that quilting creates a story. There is a story that goes with each of the fabrics. The imperfectly done pieces remind us of the learning process, and even remind us of who put together the quilt. It has been a great experience so far. Our goal is to get 5-6 done by the end of September. After that, school starts for a lot of us and we may have less time to devote to our quilting group.

Jacob's first birthday

Yesterday we had Jacob's birthday party. It was his first birthday and it was actually on the day he was born. This year has gone by fast. It's hard to believe that this boy was the little baby we brought home almost a year ago. Now he is doing a funny little army crawl and loves scooting around in his walker. He also loves anything with buttons like phones, remotes and computers.

He came 6 weeks early so he took us all by surprise. My parents were on their way to visit me for my baby shower and they arrived 4 hours after he was born. The party yesterday was a lot of fun. Jacob had a great time with all of his friends. He didn't actually get to eat his cupcake, but I made him watermelon sorbet that he did get to enjoy. I'll have more pictures of the party to share later as I go through them, but here are some to start with.

Fabric Gathering

I don't always post about the fabric I have gathered, but lately I have been gathering a lot. It is mostly to build up my stash of fabrics for the large quilting project we have taken on.

This fabric above is from Ebay. It was from a quilter's stash. There were lots of all different colors imaginable. I got the green. I should have tried for a complimentary color like peach or yellow also. Oh well. These will be going toward the Refuge House quilts. We have to make 30 or more.

I love the thrifted pillowcases above. They look almost screenprinted. They are beautiful and are probably destined to become shopping bags. I also picked up a few more yards for quilting.

I love it when estate sales have fabric. I also love it when it isn't wildly overpriced. I got all of these beauties for 25 cents a yard. Also not pictured are yards of flannel and quilted cotton for baby blankets. So much fabric and so little time.

Cloth diaper!

The diaper dilemma is over! Jacob is wearing cloth about 99 percent of the time. I love his recycled wool sweater diaper covers. I had them made from some felted sweaters that I had been saving for crafting. They cost about $12 each to make. The nice thing about wool is that it absorbs extremely well, no leaks so far. Also, there is no smell because it neutralizes the smell from the urine. They are not as bulky or warm as most people think either. They also don't irritate his skin. Overall, I'm really happy with the way things are working out. Jacob seems happy too. It's been nice because he hasn't been in daycare this summer, so we can do whatever we want with feeding and cloth diapering. We'll see how things go in the fall when he goes back to daycare. I don't think they are opposed to cloth diapers, but according to his teacher, not one mother has done it in her time working at the daycare.
